Doing It Different: Building Up A Vintage Engine
Members of the National Street Machine Club emphasize the "custom" in custom car. They come up with ingenious ways to make parts, horsepower and drivability that's different than everyone else.

Mark Simpson was no exception when he hunted down a '56 Desoto Hemi laying in a North Dakota field for his engine build instead of a more common small block Chevy.

"The decision was made to build a vintage engine, incorporating some traditional speed parts as well as some newly reproduced and freshly engineered pieces. We were less interested in all-out performance, wanting a solid, reliable engine that looked good, ran well on regular gas, and offered good performance even with thousands of road miles under its belt."

He stripped it down and contacted Bob Walker at Hot Heads Research &Racing, Inc. Bob's advice and the parts he builds are what keep early Hemis viable and competitive today. The Hot Heads website also wealth of information and pictures worth exploring.
