December 30, 2008 HellRod: '32 Ford Body with a '58 Hemi That's Wicked Good
Ken Gupton's got one of those wicked good cars that you swear you've drooled over before but slaps you in the face with unique features that are all its own.
This flamed, chopped, and channeled beast's independent rear suspension boasts a Halibrand Quickchange center section, which currently houses 4.11:1 cogs. The inboard disc brakes are Wilwood units, and the coil-over shocks are fully adjustable to determine ride height. Built around a custom tubular straight axle, the four-bar setup is also controlled by adjustable coil-overs. The look of the straight axle is essential for a true fenderless hot rod, and the flexibility of adjustable shocks allows for a relatively smooth ride with a truly low car. The '58-era 392-inch Hemi has been punched to 402 cubes and is fitted with 8.5:1 Ross blower pistons. The stock 392 iron heads have been polished and ported with hardened seats and stainless valves. The Mooneyham 6-71 Roots-type supercharger mounts upon a Hot Heads intake manifold, the ignition is lit by a vintage-style Mallory distributor, with an MSD 6AL box to amplify the zap. Tech sheets aside, it must be seen to be believed so have a look at why spectators have branded this car Hellrod.
