November 13, 2008 Wiping Out Rust with Neutralizers and Patch Panels
I haven't met a car guy yet that wasn't heavy into metal. Not the "rip your pants, crank it up and bark at the moon" Spinal Tap metal, but the "strip it, grind it and replace it with something new" kind.
If you're working on something besides a late-model car, you likely have some rust to deal with. Surface rust is a breeze to handle, but if it's eaten through something structural you'll be welding in new metal. Most cases will be something in-between where you'll need to patch or fill. If you have the luxury of tools and the skill to use them then patch panels are the strongest choice. Companies like EMS, Goodmark, Mill Supply and J.C. Whitney have huge collections of new steel formed to fit your old car at great prices. If cutting and welding isn't an option then consider grinding out the rust and using a metal based filler like Lab Metal or try neutralizing the rust with a kit from POR-15 that provides everything you need to prep, treat and seal a rusted area. If you're passionate about your metal but have been putting off repairing it, don't be intimidated; you have solutions in all price ranges for all skill levels so consider this your call to action!
