November 6, 2008 New Build on an Old Foundation: Flatheads
Some guys have a blow out and start over from scratch while others like to take care of their 60-year-old beauties, nursing them along and continually pumping money into them because of their classic looks and the sounds they make when they're revved up.
There are so many things to love in an old flathead motor, but poor aspiration isn't one of them. Thankfully, there's a whole world of aftermarket parts available, including the Magna Charger supercharger built for vintage Ford Flathead V-8s. It's designed to fit '32-'53 Ford and Mercury V8-85 engines using 59A and 8BA blocks, but won't fit the smaller V8-60 Flathead engines. You'll also have to use the later BA timing cover, which mounts the distributor at an angle. What kind of gains can you expect? Magnuson Superchargers claims chassis dyno-tested figures of 85-horsepower and a full 100 ft.-lbs. of torque using only seven psi of boost. Naturally, forged pistons and a compression ratio around 9.25:1 are recommended. Even if you don't own a Flathead, you're sure to enjoy seeing how they fit together as a slice of American engine history and the birth of hot rodding that we love today.
