September 30, 2008 Bust a Nut
Admit it, we've all broken a nut off and it's been painful, disheartening and expensive to fix. It's impossible to work on classic cars without being stopped in our tracks by nuts and bolts that have spent decades becoming locked in place.
While you're busy stripping the threads, rounding the head or breaking the shaft off in your fury, remember that letting penetrating oils or even paraffin wax seep into the crusted areas multiplies your chances of breaking that beast free. If the fastener is still fighting you, heat it up with a torch. The bolt and the hole it's in will both expand a bit, and might loosen up in the process. If you've ground the edges down to a stub on your fastener there's still hope: Super Sockets from Grip-Tite. They don't rely on the flat surfaces traditional wrenches and sockets do. Then save yourself the hassles next time around by using an anti-seizing product like Loctite that keeps nuts and bolts in place, but assures they don't stay that way for another few decades.
