Some Like it Rough
Like Bogie said, "When you're slapped you'll take it and you'll like it." Flat black final coat is pretty much entrenched in the custom car culture and we can't tell if the appeal is trying something different or some people just like their finish rough and tough, but a lot of gorgeous cars are brandishing it and NSMC member Bill Rightsell's car is no exception. When people see his eye-popping '59 Pontiac Catalina they often ask, "When are you going to finish painting it?"

Being the cool character he is, Bill smiles and answers with a confident nod of the head. "The paintwork is done, and the flat black finish is the way it will stay." Flat paint schemes hearken back to when hot rodders of the 40's and 50's ran with primer panels and now it's come full circle.

Street Machine builders can have a tendency to let form far outweigh function so maybe the fact that flat finishes are so hard to maintain is part of the allure and exclusivity. Regardless of motives, a flat paint job is a fine example of the endless ways to make a car distinctly your own so try it rough...maybe you'll like it.
