The Best of 'Bama Golf—and the Gulf

Here's how to get a feel for playing the inviting courses of the Gulf Shores Golf Association (GSGA) of Alabama:

1. Go to the Tin Top Restaurant.

2. Order Pecan Encrusted Grouper or the Steer Butt.

3. While waiting, get yourself a mess of fried pickles, crab claws in cream sauce, Dirty Dozen Oysters and a couple of Heinekens.

4. Now, listen to Chad Leonard of Rock Creek Golf Club:

"Many courses don't make golfers feel good—they're too hard to play! So we're losing people to hiking, biking, whatever. Courses gotta make it friendly, and that's what we do here."

Amen, brother! Earl Stone designed Rock Creek and TimberCreek Golf Club (see photo) so that a 15 can do some clean living and go low. Sure, there are ravines and rolling hills. And black pole pines line fairways, but they don't make you drop your big dog and back away from the tee box. The greens aren't tricked up—hey, anything's possible!

That's true for GSGA courses, including the Arnold Palmer-designed Craft Farms courses, Cotton Creek and Cypress Bend. They forgive and give you a shot at your personal best.
