May 28, 2009 The Muni Is Baaaaack!
Amazing how the uncertain economy encourages golfers to give municipal golf courses, munis, a second look. The good news is they offer good golf at good prices.
Oh yeah, forget about the muni stereotype of rickety pull carts and pock-marked fairways. Today's top munis are exceptional tracks. Here are eight, but also reconsider those in your area: Bethpage State Park-Black (Farmingdale, NY)—Will host U.S. Open in 2009. $100-$120 (N.Y. residents 50% off). Chambers Bay Golf Club (University Place, WA)—Walking only, links-style. Will host 2015 U.S. Open. $89-$169. Pinon Hills (Farmington, NM)—A desert course, one of the nation's finest public golf experiences. $41-$47. Brown Deer Park (Milwaukee, WI)—Where Tiger Woods played his first event as a professional. $79-$86. Harding Park Golf Club (San Francisco, CA)—Site of the 2009 Presidents Cup matches. $135-$155. Crandon Golf Club (Key Biscayne, FL)—Set on a barrier island minutes from downtown Miami. $58.50-$103.50. Fossil Trace (Golden, CO) (see photo)—Dinosaur footprints and other prehistoric fossils are next to the 12th green. $58-$62. Brackenridge Park (San Antonio, TX)—The oldest 18-hole public golf course in Texas, "Old Brack" was designed in 1915. $60-$70.
