Driver Quest VII:
Buying a Brand New Big Dog
Goal: Buy a 2009 driver
Why? Callaway Hawkeye ain't cutting it anymore (buy for $9.95)
Plan: Before purchasing, test drivers from Adams (reviewed), Callaway, Cleveland (reviewed), Cobra (reviewed), Nike (reviewed), Ping (reviewed), TaylorMade and Titleist (reviewed)

Today: R9 driver
  • Gotta hand it to TaylorMade-adidas Golf. It introduced adjustability with the r7 Quad driver in 2004, and now it's launching the R9, its next generation of adjustability.
  • Flight Control Technology (FCT) allows you to change face angle, loft and lie angle by loosening the FCT bolt, removing the shaft from the head, rotating the sleeve and shaft into a specified position, and then locking them into position within the head with the FCT bolt.
  • Moveable Weight Technology means the clubhead has three weight ports for one 16-gram and two 1-gram weights. Put heavy weight in heel port to promote a draw, in toe port for a fade and in the middle port to promote a straight flight.
Choice of Gary Legwold (Web Editor): I closed the clubface a notch and smoked several beauties down the middle. The plot thickens, with the Ping Rapture V2, Nike SQ DYMO STR8-FIT and now the R9 the frontrunners.
