How to Play a Pro-Am—and
Be Pleased
Playing in a pro-am can be a peak experience, especially when it dawns on you that this event is unique in all of sports.

"Think about the treat of playing with a pro," advises Randy Watkins, Viking Classic Tournament Director. "You can't do that elsewhere; you can't play with Peyton Manning before a Colts game or Roger Federer the day before Wimbledon. So enjoy getting to know the pro, asking questions, taking in tips. It's pretty cool."

Two other tips from Watkins:
  • Network. An amateur pays $3,000 to play in the Viking Classic pro-am, and the fee is usually covered by corporations, Watkins says. You are mixing with other business people, so make use of the networking possibilities.
  • Keep up. "The pro [who plays for a pension credit], your teammates, the gallery—they all want you to have a good time," says Watkins. "Just keep in mind the pace of play; abide by that. Don't hold back the group, so pick up if you have to. And if you are out of your comfort zone on a hole, don't tee off. Walk and talk with the pro. Enjoy and take it all in."
