Driver Quest VI:
Buying a Brand New Big Dog
Goal: Buy a 2009 driver
Why? Callaway Hawkeye ain't cutting it anymore (buy for $9.95)
Plan: Before purchasing, test drivers from Adams, Callaway, Cleveland (reviewed), Cobra (reviewed), Nike (reviewed), Ping (reviewed), TaylorMade and Titleist (reviewed)

Today: Adams Speedline
  • Sleek blue with yellow lettering and a streamlined profile, this is the looker of the eight drivers in the Driver Quest batch.
  • Sculpted edges are designed to create less drag and airflow turbulence. Adams says the Speedline's aerodynamic shaping results in 3 to 4 mph faster clubhead speed and 3 to 9 yards more distance.
  • "I got more clubhead speed with the Speedline—110 mph—than with any of the new drivers," says Brian Johnson of Golfsmith in Richfield, MN. "I hadn't sniffed at 110 in years, plus I put the ball on a green 291 yards away."
Choice of Gary Legwold (Web Editor): My swing speed jumped 3 to 6 mph with the Speedline. Impressive considering an increase of 1 mph = 2.5 more yards. But as much as I liked it, results were middle of the pack. Speedline's still in the running, but the Ping Rapture V2 and Nike SQ DYMO STR8-FIT remain frontrunners.
