Quirky Scene at THE PLAYERS
There have been many quirky moments in the history of THE PLAYERS Championship, which begins Thursday at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Here's one:

Ian Poulter (see photo) was frustrated with his play during the final round of the 2004 PLAYERS. He faced a seven-foot par putt on the fourth green.

After marking his ball, the Englishman snatched it off the ground in disgust and watched in horror as he lost his grip and the ball plummeted into the greenside water hazard. Facing a two-stroke penalty if the ball wasn't retrieved, Poulter called for his trainer, Kam Bhabra, who was in the gallery.

Poulter wasn't about to go in with his usually fashionable dress, and his caddie was concerned about alligators. Bhabra stripped down to his boxers and went into the waist-deep water for the ball, as Poulter directed the hunt from the green.

Bhabra found the ball within the allotted five-minute period, and Poulter sank his par putt.

The difference between Poulter's finish with a par vs. a double-bogey was just more than $21,212. "He's a great guy, would do anything for me," Poulter said of Bhabra.
