Savoring San Antonio

When visiting San Antonio, remember the Alamo, certainly, but also don't forget your golf clubs.

The San Antonio area has more than 40 golf courses, 300-plus sunny days a year and a golf tradition dating back to the early 1900s. Best of all, for bargain hunters, who're especially prevalent in this uncertain economy, San Antonio has municipal courses that are among the best in the U.S., including:

• Brackenridge Park, Texas's first public 18-hole course, built in 1916
• Pecan Valley Golf Club, site of the PGA Championship in 1968
• Cedar Creek, known for steep limestone hillsides
• Riverside Golf Course, where Teddy Roosevelt encamped troops while training for his legendary charge up San Juan Hill
• Republic Golf Club, the newest San Antonio muni
• The Quarry (see photo), where golfers are surrounded by 100-foot tall limestone walls
• Silverhorn, designed with consultation from Scott Verplank and Willie Wood
• Canyon Springs Golf Club, where you'll love the the cliff-top 10th hole
