Driver Quest IV:
Buying a Brand New Big Dog
Goal: Buy a 2009 driver
Why? Callaway Hawkeye ain't cutting it anymore (buy for $9.95)
Plan: Before purchasing, test drivers from Adams, Callaway, Cleveland (reviewed), Cobra, Nike, Ping (reviewed), TaylorMade and Titleist (reviewed)

Today: Cobra L5V ($400)
  • Very cool—an adjustable hosel that changes face angle by 1 degree. "You may be able to fix an early season fade by adjusting the clubhead," says Brian Johnson of Golfsmith in Richfield, MN. "Later, in mid-season form, you can adjust the clubhead back to neutral."
  • Tall titanium face and very large face area (46 cm.).
  • Weight-saving carbon composite in crown and sole.
Cobra S9-1 ($300)
  • All titanium, slightly smaller than L5V in order to increase CG. Also, narrower front-to-back dimensions and smaller face (43.7 cm.).
  • No adjustable hosel and weight is 6 grams lighter than L5V to increase clubhead speed.
Choice of Gary Legwold (Web Editor): S9-1 performs and feels better no matter what the hosel setting for the L5V. Increasing the size and MOI is nice, but it seems harder to return the clubhead to square with both clubs. The Ping Rapture V2 remains the frontrunner.

Win a Launcher driver from Cleveland Golf ($299).
