Driver Quest II:
Buying a Brand New Big Dog
Goal: Buy a 2009 driver
Why? Callaway Hawkeye ain't cutting it anymore (buy it for $9.95 online)
Plan: Before purchasing, test drivers from Adams, Callaway, Cleveland, Cobra, Nike, Ping, TaylorMade and Titleist (reviewed)

Today: Ping Rapture V2 ($450)
  • One classy club. Black with a low-keyed, lime green quarter-moon alignment aid.

  • Pear-shaped, 460cc titanium body has a 57mm face height, tall. Also, very large hitting area of 45.5 sq. cm. Yet this isn't a "clown-shoe" club; on the contrary, it seems smaller than most drivers.

  • External tungsten weight pads in back, near heel and toe, provide low CG for low spin and high launch and stability against off-center drives. Variable-thickness face is milled to improve ball speed on off-center hits.
Choice of Gary Legwold (Web Editor): It's early in the Driver Quest, but the Ping Rapture V2 is the front runner. Drives were longest and straightest so far. I even drove the green taking the short way on an L-shaped 297-yard par 4. Couldn't have done that with the Hawkeye.

NB: The shaft is a factor. Club Ambassador rookieblue7 was non-plussed hitting this Ping because the store shaft didn't fit his swing.

Video review: Ping Rapture V2.

XCG irons, valued at $699.
