Driver Quest I:
Buying a Brand New Big Dog
Goal: Buy a 2009 driver
Why? Callaway Hawkeye ain't cutting it anymore
Plan: Before purchasing, test eight drivers from Adams, Callaway, Cleveland, Cobra, Nike, Ping, TaylorMade and Titleist

Today: Titleist
  • 909DComp ($550)—460 cc titanium-and-composite head is "full pear profile," although it's really a D. Still, profile is tastefully Titleist. Composite crown supposedly muffles sound, but it's loud (not distracting). SureFit Swingweight Screw, which positions CG deep, works loose, but Brian Johnson at Golfsmith in Richfield, MN, tightens it. Face area: 43.6 sq. cm.

  • 909D2 ($450)—460 cc titanium head is more pear shaped than DComp, thus more appealing. A pear's a pear. Versus D3, D2 has deeper CG and shallower face, which promotes forgiveness. Face area: 41.8 sq. cm.

  • 909D3 ($450)—440 cc titanium, pear-shaped head with 41.8 sq. cm. face area. Inverted trapezoid center section (on all 909s) is taller here—nice if you hit high on the face and like to work the ball.
Choice of Gary Legwold (Web Editor): 909D2. Drives are often long and usually in the fairway—not the case with the Hawkeye. Off to a good start in the Driver Quest.
