December 1, 2008 Doing A DQ With Dignity
Golf's a strange game. You disqualify yourself for breaking a rule in a tournament—and then get praised for it!
Tournament: second stage of the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament last month at Deerwood Country Club in Kingwood, Texas. Player: J.P. Hayes, ranked 176th. He earned $312,152 this season, making seven cuts in 26 events. Situation: First round, 12th hole, Hayes' caddie gave a ball to Hayes, who played two shots onto the green. Marking his ball, he realized it wasn't the same model with which he started the round—by rule, a two-stroke penalty. Hayes shot a 74 Wednesday and 71 Thursday, and was positioned to finish in the top 20 and advance to the Qualifying Tournament finals in December. DQ: But Thursday night, Hayes had that ball on his mind. Was it on the approved list? It was a Titleist prototype that Hayes had tested for Titleist weeks before the tournament. He could keep playing, and no one would know of his mistake. Or he could fess up, which would cost him a 2009 PGA TOUR card. He called an official, who called Titleist the next day. Result: a DQ for Hayes. Here's to Hayes! And here's to the honor of the game.
