How to Shoot Your Age
Wouldn't it be nice to be 89 years old and shoot 89 for a round of golf?

Club member Art Richart did that recently. No biggie for Art, though. Playing three times weekly from the blue and black tees (blues = 6183 yards with a course rating of 70.4 and slope of 127) at Mission Valley Country Club in Laurel, Florida, Richart shot his age half the time between age 75 and 85, and 90 percent between 87 and 89. Oh, he walks the course when it's cool.

So, if you aspire to shoot your age, take these tips from Richart:
  1. Stick to your game. "You don't have the length off the tee you once had," says Richart, "so don't try to kill the ball to keep up with younger fellas."
  2. Work on your fairway metal shots because your drives are shorter.
  3. Develop a good chipping game.
  4. "Don't be afraid to use your putter off the green, even if you're 10-15 feet away."
  5. Become a good putter. Age should not hold you back on the green.
  6. Watch the LPGA Tour. "Study their swings and course management—not their shape."
