5-Footers = High Anxiety
Making 5-foot putts is the great deodorant in golf; you can stink off the tee or from the fairway, but if you make a good chip and sink that 5-footer, you come out smelling like a rose.

These aren't difficult putts, but they aren't gimmies either, primarily because of the anxiety they cause. Brandt Snedeker has these suggestions for 5-footer anxiety:
  • Boost your confidence by telling yourself that you'll make this.
  • Use your basic routine. I take five practice strokes, working on the speed of the putt. My practice strokes reflect what the real stroke will look like, but seldom do I see amateurs' practice strokes match the stroke they really make.
  • Make your backswing and follow-through match. Smooth back and smooth through.
  • Forget about swing path. At shorter distances, the putter always goes back and through straight, without opening and closing.
  • Once you've ingrained in your mind the speed you want to hit the putt, don't allow other thoughts to creep in. Immediately step in and take one last look at the hole. Hit the putt, and imagine it rolling in over the front edge.
