Hit Longer? Get Stronger!
To hit longer, there comes a point when you have to get stronger. Yes, you can hit straighter, which increases distance, and lessons and practice make for straight. But if you're still coming up short on shots, get stronger. We're talking core strength, not the stuff you check in the mirror (biceps, delts, pecs).

Try the "reverse wood chop with medicine ball." Before starting, limber up, especially the low back and midsection. Also, maintain an upright posture through most of the movement, which stabilizes the core.

1) Holding a 6- to 8-pound medicine ball with arms extended, stand with feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent.
2) Keeping the arms extended, squat to a bent-knee position and rotate and lean the upper torso so the medicine ball is just outside and below the right knee (see photo). Rotate, don't just lower your arms to the side.
3) Do a reverse wood chop, rising from the squat and rotating until the medicine ball is extended over the left shoulder. Repeat this low-right-to-high-left movement 5-10 times.
4) Repeat on the opposite side.

To increase strength even more, increase reps and medicine-ball weight. Also do the movement while standing on one leg or on a BOSU ball.

Do this three times weekly, and pretty soon you'll be playing long ball and loving it.
