A Pit Bull that Thinks it's a Hunting Dog |
|
|
Before we get to the pit bull turned hunting dog, we've got a question: Is a Labrador that doesn't retrieve birds still a retriever? Absolutely—especially if that Labrador is an antler dog.
Near a small town just north of Kansas City, Missouri, there's a unique class of Labradors being schooled right now at Antler Ridge. These dogs are deviating from their family tradition of chasing wings to instead become world-class antler dogs. A new breed of retriever is being born—one pup at a time—under the patient hand and watchful eye of master trainer Roger Sigler.
And believe it or not, a pit bull is kicking their butts. Pit bull "Porter" was stuck in a pound, bound to be euthanized, before Sigler took a chance and brought him home. Now he's one of the best antler dogs at Antler Ridge. "I didn't know what to expect, but he's nothing like you'd think a pit bull would be," Sigler said. "He's great with the pups, and we've taken him to the hospital to visit patients. My wife calls him our 'ugly kid.'"
Ugly or not, see if your dog has what it takes. |
