Mark Kayser's Keys for Late-Season Whitetails |
|
|
Snow has covered much of the country, and temps in the Midwest and Northeast have wavered between below zero and 15 degrees. This might sound less than ideal for hunting, but whitetail guru Mark Kayser says such conditions are perfect this time of year.
"Most bucks have lost a minimum of 20 percent of their body mass in the past month of breeding pandemonium," Kayser wrote in his HuntingClub.com blog. "This gives you an advantage because bucks can't simply wait out the weather; they need to go against their better judgment and plow through the snow to devour calories."
Kayser's advice? Don't wait on the field edge. "Take a gamble and move your stand into the woods 100 yards or more along well-used trails between feeding and bedding grounds."
His whitetail wisdom doesn't end there (no wonder his video tips on Versus.com are so popular). "My second tip right now is to avoid morning hunts if they'll require you to walk near feeding grounds in the dark."
