Forget Pen Pals—Get a Bird Pal

Say you're visiting some friends across the country this summer. Say you want to do something a little out of the ordinary on your vacation. Something in the Great Outdoors. Something not too expensive. Here's the ticket: www.birdingpal.org.

This great little site connects you with amateur birders around the country and the world. Just click on the area you're visiting and you'll get a list of folks who would love to show you the best birding spots they know. Why? Because they love birds. Your cost? Gas, and possibly lunch.

The site also has listings for professional guides, regional wildlife clubs, bird guidebooks and references, international birding tours, birding Web sites, and more. If you've got even a smidgen of interest in the road not taken, you'll want to take a gander at www.birdingpal.org.
