June 16, 2009 An eco-friendly way to plant
After a weekend spent planting annuals and vegetables, your yard is littered with plastic pots, flats, and trays—and in most cases, they can't be recycled or returned to the garden center. What's an eco-concerned gardener to do?
One creative solution comes from Bonnie Plants, which sells its plants in biodegradable pots. You don't remove the plant from the pot. Instead, you just plop the plant and its container straight into the ground. As the pot disintegrates, the plant's roots grow through the peat and into the surrounding soil. The company says it's already kept 100 million pounds of plastic out of landfills. To keep that number growing and prevent piles of plastic in your own yard, check out Bonnie Plants at big box stores and independent garden centers across the country.
