May 12, 2009 Plant A Garden, Fill A Tummy
You know how some years you harvest enough zucchini to fill a pickup truck? Twice? Or so much basil that you let some of it flower because you're sick of pesto?
Relax. Go ahead and pick it all. There are folks out there who don't just want your extras—they need them. In fact, there are 36 million people (including 13 million kids) who need them. This year a trio of companies has joined forces to help your extra vegetables get to those empty plates. Scotts Miracle-Gro Co., Feeding America (formerly called Second Harvest), and Plant a Row for the Hungry have launched GroGood, a campaign that encourages gardeners to donate edibles to local food banks and promotes community gardens. As part of the campaign, Scotts Miracle-Gro will donate 1 million pounds of produce to food shelves across the country. They're asking gardeners to match that amount. So go ahead, plant that extra zucchini. You'll be doing somebody a favor.
