April 7, 2009 Pots Made from Cow Poop?
You coddle your precious vegetable seedlings for months, until the day finally comes when it's time to transplant your babies into the garden. As you rip them out of their pots, disturbing the roots, your worries about transplant shock give you a headache the size of a giant pumpkin.
With a practical, eco-friendly new product invented by Connecticut dairy farmers, you can put down the aspirin bottle. CowPots are biodegradable pots made from composted cow manure. They allow roots to grow out the sides and bottoms, preventing the plant from getting rootbound—then they dissolve within weeks once you plant them in the garden. If you're squeamish at the thought of handling cow poop, don't be. The manure is dried, composted, and mixed with natural fibers before being pressed into pots, so there are no unpleasant odors. Look for CowPots at nurseries and garden centers or online—and rest easy knowing you're supporting a local business, using an eco-friendly product, and saving yourself transplant headaches all at the same time.
