Get Fish to Bite No Matter What |
|
|
When you've got fish located, the most efficient approach is a vertical presentation that matches their mood. Land an active lure among a school of feeders, or a more subtle bait within inhaling distance of bottom huggers, and you're bound to catch 'em. And that goes whether you're dropping a line through a hole in the ice, or over a boat gunnel.
When your sonar shows fish off the bottom and active, a jigging spoon or jigging minnow is the proper lure choice. Fished aggressively, these lures trigger deliberate strikes, and often draw in more fish from the surrounding area.
A leadhead jig, tipped with an artificial or natural bait, however, is one option when you need to tone things down for fish riding the bottom or tucked into cover. That's when their strike zones shrink to nearly nothing, and you've got to dabble the bait in front of their snouts.
Make sure you've got at least one of each type of bait in your box, or get real efficient with something like Lindy's Slick Jig, which can tackle both presentations equally well. Snap it hard and it descends in a wide arc back to a tight line—just the ticket when fish are chasing. Bump it on the bottom when their mood is negative. Just be sure to tip it with a whole minnow, fake or real, to act as a rudder.
