Here's the Tool, But Where's the Switch? |
|
|
The trouble with trigger switches is that your trigger finger can activate the tool just by casually picking it up, which can be dangerous. You get around that problem with switches that are set away from the grip. But the potential safety issue is when an accident happens while you're running the tool; you need to shut down everything PDQ.
Fein has come up with a solution — what we call a safer angle grinder that's caused us to reward the tool manufacturer with a 2009 HANDY Innovation Award. It's the WS 14 angle grinder with TipStart, and the TipStart feature works like this:
Designed to prevent accidental activation, the tool won't start until you touch in rapid succession one of the front and one of the rear pads. In operation, contact with one of the pads is sufficient. AutoStop automatically switches the machine off when the pad is released, so you don't have to manually turn it off.
TipStart can almost make you overlook the angle grinder itself. Big mistake because the grinder is, in a word, robust. Read about its applications.
