July 8, 2009 Cut Energy Bills 15 Percent
With Wind Turbine Wind power gets personal with the new Honeywell Wind Turbine from EarthTronics. Think windmill — minus the mill. Put it on the roof of your house, and harness the wind to meet as much as 15 percent of your home's electricity needs.
The 6-ft.-dia. residential turbine weighs only 95 pounds and operates in wind speeds as low as 2 mph, which is significant since most wind speeds are less than 9 mph. At the other end of the scale, the Honeywell Wind Turbine generates power in wind speeds as great as 45 mph — far more than traditional wind turbines, which shut down at 29 mph to protect the gearing system. The home turbine's gearless system improves efficiency and eliminates mechanical resistance and drag — and much of the noise associated with other wind turbines. The unit will be available in December 2009 (holiday stocking stuffer??) through contractors, retailers and hardware stores. See video of the new Honeywell Wind Turbine from EarthTronics.
